Step 1: Prevent and repair leaks
Fix the places around your home that are poorly insulated or that allow air to leak in and out so your new air conditioner will perform at its best.

Step 2: Determine size
Find out what size unit you need by measuring the space to be cooled or by having a central air specialist inspect your home.

Step 3: Understand SEER
Understand the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a measure of how much cooling a unit puts out per unit of power. A higher SEER means greater efficiency.

Tip
Look for models with the EnergyStar logo and a SEER of at least 13 as baseline indicators of an efficient unit.

Step 4: Understand features
Look for additional features that will help conserve energy, like a thermal expansion valve, an auto delay fan switch, and a filter change indicator.

Tip
Look for a second rating, called the EER, with a value of 11.6 or higher. Higher values mean more efficient operation in the hottest temperatures.

Step 5: Comparison shop
Compare the output, performance, and SEER ratings of various models in your price range.

Step 6: Make the purchase
Purchase the most energy-efficient model you can afford.

Behind your home and automobile, your heating system might be the largest investment that you have, so it makes sense to get the most efficient equipment that you can to preserve your dollars. Let's talk about a couple of acronyms associated with that to measure the value and efficiency of your system.

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is related to gas-fired furnaces, boilers and hot water heaters. Old systems were rated between 65 and 70 percent. Today's standard efficiency is 80% degrees or higher and 90% or better is high efficiency. For every dollar you spend on the old equipment you already own, you may be getting back only 65 to 70 cents worth of heat. Consider that versus a 90% high efficiency system, where 90 cents of every dollar is going to be converted right over to heat.

Another rating is HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) which relates to your heat pump units which produce electricity. You want to look for a rating of 8.0 or higher, which is high efficiency.
The last acronym is the SEER rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), which is related to cooling from your air conditioning compressor or our heat pump. Old units will be in the 8 to 10 range. For new units, the minimum standard is 13 SEER and it goes all the way up to 18 SEER which is high efficiency. Again, this gives you a valuation for how efficient your equipment will be and how your money is going to be best spent.
